NAME
  • Wipefs -a on all of the drives 📷 Jacobo1223. This thread is archived. New comments cannot be posted and votes.
  • The wipefs command is part of the util-linux package and is available from ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/util-linux/.

DESCRIPTION wipefs can erase filesystem, raid or partition-table signatures (magic strings) from the specified device to make the signatures invisible for libblkid. Wipefs does not erase the filesystem itself nor any other data from the device. # wipefs -offset 0xff6 /dev/loop0 10 bytes 53 57 41 50 53 50 41 43 45 32 erased at offset 0xff6 (swap) The wipefs(8) command does not erase whole filesystem superblock or so. It removes magic strings only. Now the device is useful for blkid(8): # blkid -p /dev/loop0. Given the command wipefs -a /dev/sdx. (expanded to wipefs -a /dev/sdx /dev/sdx1 /dev/sdx2 /dev/sdx3), with the intention to wipe all known signatures from the disk and all its partitions. The problem is of course, it doesn't work that way.

NAME

wipefs −wipe a signature from a device

SYNOPSIS

wipefs[−ahnptV] [−ooffset]device

DESCRIPTION

wipefscan erase filesystem, raid or partition table signatures(magic strings) from the specified device to make thesignature invisible for libblkid.

wipefsdoes not erase the filesystem itself nor any other data fromthe device. When used without options -a or-o, it lists all visible filesystems and the offsetsof their basic signatures.

Note that somefilesystems or some partition tables store more magicstrings on the devices. The wipefs lists the firstoffset where a magic string has been detected. The device isnot scanned for additional magic strings for the samefilesystem. It’s possible that after wipefs -o<offset> will be the same filesystem or partitiontable visible by another magic string on another offset.

When used withoption -a then all for libblkid visible magic stringsare erased.

OPTIONS

−a,−−all

Erase all available signatures. This set of erased signatures could be restricted by−t <list> option.

−h,−−help

Print help and exit.

−n,−−no−act

Causes everything to be doneexcept for the write() call.

−o,−−offsetoffset

Specify the location (in bytes)of the signature which should be erased from the device. Theoffset number may include a '0x' prefix;then the number will be interpreted as a hex value. It ispossible to specify multiple -o options.

Theoffset argument may be followed by binary (2^N)suffixes KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB, PiB and EiB (the 'iB'is optional, e.g. 'K' has the same meaning as'KiB') or decimal (10^N) suffixes KB, MB, GB, PBand EB.

−p,−−parsable

Print out in parsable insteadof printable format. Encode all potentially unsafecharacters of a string to the corresponding hex valueprefixed by ’x’.

−t,−−typeslist

Used to limit the set ofprinted or erased signatures. More than one type may bespecified in a comma-separated list. The list of types orindividual types can be prefixed with ’no’ tospecify the types on which no action should be taken. Formore details see mount(8).

−V,−−version

Wipefs Mac

Output version information andexit.
